The present temple was built in 1809 on the site
of an ancient temple. It is also known as the Kalighat temple. It is an important
pilgrimage and Shrine of the Goddess Kali - the supreme cosmic power inherence in India at
Kolkata. When the Lord Shiva frantically danced exhibiting outrageous cosmic exasperation
in fury (Tandav Nritya) to destroy the Universe at the loss of his beloved wife Sati's
life, the legent says that the Lord Visnu saved the Universe from being ravaged by cutting
the body of Sati into pieces and spreading those throughout India. Each of those parts of
the body wherever fell, that place became a pilgrimage and storage of Cosmic power.
Kalighat is one such pilgrimage where the little finger of Sati exists. Hence peoples come
here to get touch of that blessed part of Sati with some wishes and prayers which they get
fulfilled by the Cosmic power of Her grace. May it be Birlas, Tatas, Ambanis or any
business tycoon or any ordinary businessman of any strature, on the day of Ram Navami,
Akshaya Tritya and Poila Baishakh (1st day of Bengali New Year) and other auspecious days
especially leaving aside all important engagements and appointments every one comes to the
Deity to get Her touch of blessings and Nirmalyas by offering Pujas for their all success
and prospects in business and daily life.
